1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here am I.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here am I, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
When we think of worship, all too often, the first thought that comes to mind is the singing of songs. However, in this passage, worship is shown to be much more than the harmonizing of voices or the sounds that come from skillfully played instruments. Worship here is seen as a total abandonment of personal will for the perfect will of God. It is a sacrificial offering of personal desires in a pursuit of what He wants. It is the brokenness that gives way to a submissive heart that has been birthed out of a relationship with God that you value more than anything else in you life. In short, worship is obedience.
As you go through this week, take time to reflect on how committed you are to doing all that God has asked you to do. What sacrifices are you willing to make in pursuit of what He desires? What personal agenda’s are you willing to abandon? What dreams are you willing to sacrifice on the alter of obedience?
1st Samuel 15:22
“Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.”
The expression of our gifts and talents before God are great. However, please understand, the truest form of worship is total obedience. Always remember, what you offer in song means nothing if it is offered from a disobedient and rebellious heart. Worship God through your obedience.
